this update:12/20/07

Hello All! The bionic arm is healing fine now. Had a great Big 80's Flashback Bash this year! It's great every year but this year was best because of my crappy summer. Old faves Red September and The Toxins played and tore it up with "Synchronicity 2" and "Burnin' Down the House" respectively. New faves Apartment 4 rocked the house with "Debaser" and Popsicle Shiv played Gang of Four's "Found that Essence Rare" to perfection! I dressed as myself in the 80's which was really no different from how I dress today minus a few safety pins and studs! Thanks for everyone who came down to rock the party with us! See you back next year! My Halloween in Hell was pretty damn good too!

What's on the plate for Static for the rest of the year? Besides taking time to enjoy life as much as possible, we have the Home for the Holidaze 5 acoustic music benefit taking place on Fri. Dec. 21 at 313.jac and features 5 singer-songwriters performing for homeless shelters for people and animals and also charitymusic.com collecting used instruments for needy kids. Check out the show page for more info.

Also, we are releasing the debut CD from The POLKA FLOYD show this November and are pretty damn excited about it! If you haven't heard about the band yet check them out at myspace.com/polkafloyd Yes, they are exactly what you think-Pink Floyd done polka style! You can see them live at the Hard Rock Cafe in Detroit on Thu. Nov. 29.

Feeling much better and looking forward to Fall not falling! Thank you to everyone who took the time to check in and see how I was doing and helping out when needed. I really appreciate it and thank god for such good friends! The "bionic" arm is doing better considering it's only been two months! I'll be touching my head in no time. Made it to Dally this year thanks to the wonderful Linda Flynn and her crew. That should help pay for some medical bills and also the upcoming 12th annual Static Big 80's Flashback Bash!

The 12th annual Big 80's Flashback Bash is Sat. Oct. 27 at Paychecks and features two new bands; Apartment 4 and Popsicle Shiv adding to the perennial favorites; Red September-Walkin Talkin Toxins and Bruce Bryson opening the show. Hope to see you there this year

We are sorry to hear that WDET has cancelled all of it's rock n' roll programming this week. Gone are the three shows that supported local music the most: The Ralph Valdez Show, Alternate Take with Liz Copeland and Night Train with Mick Collins. This is a great loss to the Detroit music scene, as there very few outlets for local indie music to be played now. The NPR station also axed the DSO show, cut in half the jazz and worldbeat shows as well and replaced them with more talk and a BBC show. What's Detroit Rock City without the ROCK?

It's officially spring in Michigan! Where else can you go from wearing mittens to no jackets at all all in one week's time? Whatever happened to leather weather that in between time to get acclimated to the extreme hot and cold?

this update:3/27/07

Detroit rednecks (how does that work?) Bullcock belch up seven greasy nuggets of white trash wisdom and speedy booze rock (standout: “I Think That Stripper Really Likes Me”)  that sound a whole lot like those dearly departed Motor City cowboy killers, Peter Torque. Torque II, maybe. So ya get cowboy hats, a fittingly phlegmy scumrock bellow, slippery punk n’ roll guitars, the occasional groovy girl-group backing vocals courtesy the excellently named Shantena, an even more occasional fat organ riff, songs about drugs and trailer park wimmen, a dude dressed up like the devil, and the general feeling that these fuckers like the Supersuckers and cheap American beer even more than you do. Oh, and in the interest of literalism, a cover shot of a pig’s swollen testicles. Yeehaw.  _______________________________________________________

Static Records was asked to contribute (donate) music to the U.K. unauthorised documentary film about The White Stripes called "Candy Coloured Blues".
The documentary was filmed in Detroit earlier this year and features in-depth interviews from infamous Detroiters; Gold $ proprieter- Neil Yee, Ms. Queen Bee-Karen Neil, The Paybacks-Wendy Case, Producer-Jim Diamond and more scenesters discussing the band's penchant for wearing red and white outfits and debating about how many people were there at their first show. It also includes exclusive and previously unseen film footage of the band but none of their music?!?
Instead you will hear the likes of The Riots, BootseyX ,VAVOOM's classic ode to the city "Detroit", and two more bands (the Generals & Watershed) from the very first Static compilation ever entitled "Fist Full of Chaos". If you really want a copy of this classic compilation we have cassettes (remember them?) only left and maybe a few Cds or I'l burn you a copy. For the rest of the stuff you need to contact the bands thru their websites.
To get a copy of the White Stripes unauthorised documentary DVD contact chrome dreams (sorry no website listed) or check your local record store where you are likely to find a used copy after people are done watching it once and realize there is no actual white stripes music in the film.

It was a 1-for-12 night (jeez, the TIGERS do better than that!) for Static Records and the family of bands at the Detroit Music Awards as only Static won for "Best Record Label". Since any label is only as good as it's roster, we like to think this is an acknowledgement of the excellence of ALL our great bands. Thanks to THEM for making Static what it is.

JETTISON RED's new song "Dead Heroes" has made it to No. 1 on the Alternative Charts at Garageband.com for the past two weeks. A good omen for an album they haven't started recording in earnest yet.

If they say that no news is good news, then 2003 was off to a good start! Sorry for the delay, here we go...

First up: Static Records is once again nominated for "Best Record Label" in the 2003 Detroit Music Awards. All the current Static Records artists are also nominated in their respective categories. As the saying goes, "It's great just to be nominated." Congratulations guys (and girl)!

Static has two new compilation projects on deck for this year. "Detroit vs. Detroit" will pay tribute to local musical heroes who inspired and rocked our world. Static artists and other faves from the scene will contribute tracks. It is in the works and will be released this fall. The second in the series is "Motor City Madness" (title subject to change) a compilation of bands doing covers of songs about Detroit. Look for that one in the winter.

FORGE is busy breaking in their new drummer playing shows in the area and around the region. They'll be returning to the studio in May to record their long-awaited follow up to "Trials".

JETTISON RED was recently a regional finalist in the Guitar Center Band Search and the Opportunity Rocks contest. The band received an endorsement from Red Bull for consuming cases of the beverage on their regional tours. Drummer Nicky Stixx is subbing on drums for the Gore Gore Girls on their recent tour with the legendary band The Cramps. The band will start recording in May at The Loft.

DOWNTOWN BROWN -These Motor City Madmen received a pre-endorsement from Jagermeister! All it took was semi-nude photos of the band having a Jagermeister orgy with a dog to land this deal! (We aren't kidding. Don't believe us? See? We will NOT be paying your therapy bills!) Expect free Jager swag at their shows soon. Their CD, "Moist & Ridiculous", has been receiving airplay nationally, great reviews in mags like PIT Magazine and has been nominated for Best Rock Album in the Detroit Music Awards.

RED SEPTEMBER - "Wake Up Call" received a great review in the esteemed indie magazine The Big Takeover. They are also infiltrating TV and radio airwaves in Toronto and Costa Rica.

NO ALTERNATIVE - The band recently had a song selected from their CD "Now or Never" to be played on the MTV series "Road Rules".

While Twitch is no longer, look for ROSHAMBO the newest musical creation from former Twitchers, bassist Tim Taebel and drummer Scott Lemanski.

In sad news: while we are still mourning the death of Joe Strummer and Dee Dee Ramone last year, we'd like to bid a fond farewell to the infamous Detroit band The Trash Brats who called it quits recently. They were one of the longest running and funnest bands to hail from Detroit. Cheers to 20 years and those memories of the Mystery Lounge...

In good news: We have found the new Lili's and it's called Suzy's!! Taking a break from The Blowout, we finally had a chance (and a night off from Jacoby's) to visit Lili's bartender and all around cool guy, Michael, at his new place, Suzy's. It's reminiscent of the great Lili's  in a lot of ways and has cheap drinks and a good jukebox (Buckcherry anyone?) and it has Michael pouring the swill on Wednesday and Saturday nights. It is on the corner of Evaline and Jos. Campau in Hamtramck. Check it out!

This update 3/28/03

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE! New years mean new beginning and we've got a lot of changes to let you know about, so let's go...

Jettison Red have a new bassist (again?!?) and we'll let you know his name after he has been in the band at least six months! (Or you can just check their profile page.) Catch them on their constant shows thruout the Midwest.

In even bigger news, Forge has finally found a new, full-time drummer to clobber the kit. JoeSmith (not a typo - he was born with the rare condition known as Siamese or conjoined name) has passed the trials and bassist Steve Greene reports, "Our first practice was as good as a bad show." Look for them to get on the road and back in the studio in the really near future.

Red September's new bassist is actually their old one. After a year of filling in, Cliff Finch has reassumed the spot he held originally before leaving for work-related reasons in 1996. Red Leader, Peter Schorn, says, "I have no idea what happened to [his predecessor], but he just lost touch with us. We're lucky that we got someone who not only knows the "Wake Up Call" stuff, but a lot of older material that no one's heard yet." They plan to go into the studio shortly to record tracks for a slew of comps and tributes on deck for 2003. Work on their next original CD is scheduled for summer.

In not so great news, Bullcock played what may have been their last show on Jan. 11 at Jacoby's. Leader Kevin "Chopper" Peshkopia has decided to move to New Jersey to work for his brother's hamster-ranching and yeti-shaving company, "Scooter's Haus of Yeti & Hamsters". This is a doubly-sad moment for the Static family because not only was Bullcock a terrific band, but Kevin's been with us since the days we were called "Chaos Records". From his days with The Generals to the Immortal Winos of Soul to Bullcock, Kevin has been channeling Keef and bringing his sardonic wit to the party. We wish him the best in his new life in Joisey.

Finally, Downtown Brown would like to reassure people that when they say that they'll "rock your ass off", it doesn't mean that you will suffer actual ass damage. You will still be able to sit down after attending their awesome shows. (Slight soreness is normal though. Put a heating pad on it.)
